Qualities of Good Home Design

Accessible

What is good design if it’s only available to some. Here in the US, detailed codes dictate that our built environment be accessible to those with disabilities. Often times it is important to look beyond these minimum standards.

Functional

Many minimalist houses have a simple, straightforward, efficient plan layout with stacked volumes of spaces. This creates clarity in plan, where spaces are predictable and uncomplicated. Simple forms, open floor plans, minimal interior walls, modest storage areas, and an emphasis on views and daylight are defining characteristics of many minimalist floor plans.

Well Made

Architects don’t make anything. Our say in how well a building is built is limited to a set of instructions we provide. The end people that actually build it have little to no actual interaction with the architect. This means our instructions better be good, and just as important, easy to understand.

Simple Detailing Devoid of Decoration

Many minimalist interiors are also characterized by clean cabinetry, stair, and trim details – paring down to only what is necessary.

Detailing cabinetry with flat slab panels instead of raised or recessed panels and minimally exposed hardware eliminates the visual noise often seen with cabinetry.
